The Ramada Limited - Salinas Steinbeck Package

John Steinbeck was born in Salinas in 1902 in what is now the Steinbeck House in Oldtown Salinas. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1919 and attended Stanford University in Palo Alto. He later moved to New York to begin his career as a writer, but soon returned to Salinas. Steinbeck spent the next few decades living between New York and the Monterey Bay area, writing novels and raising a family. Steinbeck’s breakthrough novel, Tortilla Flat, catapulted him to fame in 1935. Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 for the controversial Grapes of Wrath. In 1962, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968.

The Steinbeck HouseThe Steinbeck House. Located near the National Steinbeck Center, the Steinbeck House is John Steinbeck’s birthplace and childhood home. The beautifully Victorian home was restored in 1974 and opened as a restaurant and gift shop. The menu features locally grown produce and Monterey County wines. Steinbeck memorabilia and photographs are displayed throughout the property.
